Front differential

I have a 07 650i. I just rebuilt the front end and noticed a leak in the front diff where the driveshaft goes in. It has play when I rock it back and fourth in 4wd. It's the yoke where the driveshaft goes into goes in and out slightly when rocking it .. I asked another group they say diff is on its way out. I wonder if the nut got loose behind the shaft.. I have a video that I'll try to post

That coupler and it's bushing to the pinion are known to wear and cause movement..a wobble or side to side movement that makes the "big" seal leak and the "small" seal inside with that bushing can as well...however end play or in and out movement suggests the pinion is moving and that only happens when..yes, the bearing retainer backs off or the bearing itself is failing. Now the coupler retainer, the small 10mm nut you see with the drive line out, could be loose...but it would be so rare its in there with the "Unlikely" area of posibilities...but stranger things have happened so take a look.

So mine is in in out play I'm sure its that bearing so is that something I can do in the machine or do I have to split the diff . And if I have to what else should be redone in it...

That you can do in frame. Remove the driveline & actuator. Then drain the oil. Then remove that 10mm nut and slide out the coupler and remove the oil seal..yes replace it. Reach in and slide out the slide coupler. From there you will need the special tool to un-screw the bearing retainer. Once out the pinion will just slide out with the outer bearing. I am not sure if the inner one will come with it. I will say this- it is very rare that the front diff's pinion bearing retainer comes loose but it happens on the rears of the IRS's all the time. The front pinion bearings will fail if they don't get oil changes regular or are run with water in them. Check the play before you remove the pinion.

If you have to split the case might as well replace all the diff-loc friction plates and all bearing, seals, spider gears and pin.
