Last fall I purchased a used 2006 brute force 650. This spring I was riding Down a gravel road and the bike lost power and shut down on me. I dragged it home and found that after I pulled the motor both cams have lobes that have been worn down. I never lost oil in the motor as I have seen on many threads. I also noticed that the front cylinder timing is off by half the gear. What would cause the cams to wear down like this and the timing to be off so much. It seemed to run fine when I bought it. Is it worth replacing the cams and adjusting the timing or does the motor need a full rebuild at this point? Are these Kawi motors inference motors? Is it likely that the valves damaged the pistons as well from the timing being off?
Worth replacing a few things. When the chains wear they also stretch and although the tensioners take up the slack on the back side the distance between the the links does change making the cam trail more and more as they get worse. It usually take two links to cause the piston to hit a valve..well in your case as stretched as they are maybe only one...but being a half-tooth off would be a common thing to see on one that's in need of a new set of chains and bars..all chains, including the intermediate and pump drive chains.
As for the cams, usually going fast means it lost oil to the top end but it can happen pretty quickly if the hard surfacing was warn through along with mis-adjusted valves. They would be pretty loud though. Still, yes, replace the chains, tensioner bars, cams, rockers and I would also replace the cam sprockets. If she still has good compression and the valves are still in good shape, she should give you many more miles of life and smiles.
