Unhappy Buddy killed two days ago on ATV ride

First, he was a really good guy I worked with, two kids, 10 and 12. We weren't best buddies but we knew each other and have been on rides together in the past. This was for a big BBQ and Ride a couple nights ago with a bunch of the guys I work with. I was invited but couldn't go because I was hung up at work for the last couple weeks. It was about 9pm, just getting dark and they were heading home. 6 of them were headed up a county road when Roy's ice chest fell of the back of his 450 hondo. Everyone pulled over and he turned back around to go get it. he pulled off the road on the right. facing away from traffic. all of them had their lights on. He picked up his ice chest and was standing behind his four wheeler strapping down his ice chest on the rear rack when a car came around the slow bend in the road and barely missed two of the bikes and struck roy and his ATV in the rear. Roy was pinched between the two and the car was going about 50. It knocked Roy and his bike about 40 yards down the road from where contact was made. Totaling out both. Roy came to rest face up with his left leg behind him, foot by his head, toes facing up. His left leg was twisted around twice and right foot was under his arm, toes facing in. He lived about 90 mins at the hospital before dieing. He was conscious at the scene but went out in the ambulance. Never regained consiousness at hospital. At the scene his eyes were open and he was looking at the guys moving his mouth but couldn't say anything. He was struggling for breath. His best friend knelt by him and held his hand till ambulance got there. About 15 mins. Everyone is still in shock at work and pretty upset. funeral is tomorrow. There was four in the car. Two guys in the back and a guy and girl in the front. The two in the front were arrested but not sure of the charges yet. Not sure if alcohol was involved or not yet. They well off the road when they hit him. The first thing the guy said when he got out was. "did i just hit someone?" Everyone must have been in total shock because I can't believe he didn't get his head caved in. That was a pretty rough group. Whole thing was a bad deal. The paper got everybit of it wrong. The first article said Roy ran into a parked car etc.... There was a full retraction the next day and the story was closer but still not right. The press still amazes me...... Thinking of some things to do for the family...

So sorry to hear about Roy. Seems you hear about close-calls all the time about riding but its the mistakes of others more often that takes lives...and its usually someone that will be missed. I hope the driver gets what he deserves along with a lifetime memory of what he has done. What a terrible way to go.

Sorry to hear about your buddy. It's sad that he is leaving 2 small kids. It's even sadder that it was apparently no fault of his own. I hope the driver is dealt with accordingly.

Thanks all, there were several more at the plant that were closer to him than me and a couple are still having a hard time with it. Going to be rough on his wife and kids.. Heard today he didn't have any life insurance.
