Synthetic Rope or Cable
Are many of you running the synthetic rope in your winches or staying with the cable? I know the advantages of rope, but it seems to be considerably more expensive. I can buy a lot of aircraft cable for the price of one rope. Anyways, I was wondering if they are lasting longer than cable, more reliable, etc...

depends on where you are riding and what you are winching off of. for me, cable is the only way to go as I am dragging my line across sharp rocks and around tree's all the time. I tried a synthetic rope on mine and I had it snap in a few months.

I don't use my winch that much but I just feel better using cable.

Cable has worked well for many years, but synthetic rope is just as strong (stronger according to some) and has better characteristics than cable. It doesn't fray like cable, so you know you're not going to cut yourself on rope. It doesn't kink like cable. Also, synthetic rope collects onto the spool MUCH easier than cable, which has a tendency snag on itself as it retracts. As for rocks and trees, most winches with synthetic rope come with some sort of sleeve that you can adjust to put over rocks and other sharp obstacles to avoid damaging the rope. I think it's worth the extra money.

I love my rope but don't have much sliding over rocks or sharp things, Its always mud, sand or pulling a deer up in a tree. Like much more than cable but works for me in my situation.

Having the Warn XT30 winch, it came with the synthetic winch rope. Yes it's more exspensive than wire rope, but after all of my reading up on synthetic winch rope, I truely feel it's better. I like it so much, that I spent $325 for 100' of 3/8" synthetic winch for my GMC's 12K winch.
