Default need advice

Hi,

Right now I'm running 27'' BIGHORNS on itp rims. Love them, only problem is that they are so damn heavy. I was thinking about buying a set of 25'' terracross on 14'' ss312's. Can anyone see any problems with this setup? Someone told me that there wont be enough sidewall, and I'll lose traction. I was thinkign that this set will be real light and easy to turn. thanks for any advice.

Hi TommyPak, welcome to the site. I think you are going to find that any aftermarket tire & rim setup is going to be very much heavier then the stocks, especialy with radials...which I am very spoiled on and will never give up. I am now on 26x11 BajaCross on 14X8 ss112s. There is no problem with the sidewalls and they handle better then it did with the 27" XTRs on 14" Vission rims I had before. Still a heavy tire but not as heavy as the 11" XTRs. The 25s...on 14" rims...well..that's cutting it close on sidewall. Probably great on quick trails but watchout for big rocks. Not much crush distance on the side walls. Your buddy might have a point. I don't personaly think I'd go smaller then 26s on 14s. Just my opinion.

Welcome to the site. 25" on 14" rims won't leave much sidewall but it might be ok depending on your type of riding. If I went with 14" rims, I'd get at least a 26" tire. The trails I ride have a lot of rocks, so my personal preference is for 12" rims just to give me a little more tire flex. 27" Bighorns is a lot of tire. Bighorns measure big compared to other brands. I just purchased a set of 26" Bighorns for my new quad. I have a set of 26" Bighorn 2.0's on my '08. The 2.0 are much lighter. You might consider them or just going down to 26". A one inch down size will reduce the weight quite a bit.

My 26" BigHorns measure almost 27"! Wouldn't trade 'em for nothin! Lighter than a lot of tires out there.

A 27" Big Horn is a heavy tire. I sold my 26" Horns after about 400 miles of use. I loved the handling and trail traction they provided...great for rocks...but I wanted a slightly more aggressive mud tire so I went with 28" Zillas on 14" 108s. They weight about the same or a little less than my old Bighorns. Of course, like stated before, radials weight more so no big surprise. A 25" tire on a 14" wheel wouldn't work where I ride. The rocks would eat them. If you must have 25" tires, stick with 12" wheels...I still use my stock tires and wheels for normal trail riding and around the house. When I want to play in the mud, I throw on the Zillas.

I run 25" Goodyear MT/R radials, on 12" rims and am very happy with them. I have had no flats and they are fairly light. Definitely lighter than the Bighorns. They are a good all around tire and work well for fast trail riding.

BTW... If you ever make it as far north as Plattsburgh be sure to holler and we can hook up for a ride.

Thanks for all the replys. I'm gonna go with the 25" reapers on 12" rims. I appreciate all the feedback.

ADK- next time I'm headed that way I'll give you a buzz. Or vice versa, if you make it down towards me shoot me an email.

TP.
