I used a 2 1/2" hole saw instead of a steel pipe cap on the one I made. It already has a hole drilled in the top and it's easier to cut away the window, just grind the teeth off and you're done.

Thats a good idea with the hole saw for someone that has an old one laying around. The steel cap is hard to cut away with out the right tools no doubt.
I now have a window cut on both sides of my steel cap instead of just one like it is in the pic i posted. With a window on both sides it MUCH easier to get the clip on and off.

I think I'll cut the other side too. I'll need to tighten the belt soon and the clip was a hassle to get out from just one side.....thanx

hate to bring up and old threat so from what i gather its a 2 inch diameter pipe you need to fit over the spring.

You need a 2" steal pipe cap. A piece of 5/8 all thread and a few nuts and washers. I have a pic of the one i made listed above but I've since when back and cut another widow in it. So it has two now. This will allow you to get to both sides of the cir clip.
Heres a pic. Works great.
