When I bought by Brute, the salesman told me that with a stock machine, I wouldn't be able to go into water as deep as I had been going in with my Grizzly. I don't usually go into deep water at all but I also don't want to get caught by surprise. Is it in my best interest to snorkel it or with casual riding in mud/water would I be ok?

the way the brute intakes are set up the air and clutch intake are lower than the grizzlies and are also bad for taking in water from just splashing the water when driving into puddles. My second trip out with only 4 hrs. on my machine I swamped mine going into a 6" deep water hole, I was going about 15mph or so following my buddy on my old honda, he was going twice as fast as me into the water, the way it splashed up it went right into the air intake and filled my engine. If you like hitting water with any kind of speed or going a little deeper is is a good idea to snorkel. For the air intake, if you don't want to snorkel, EHS has the mudders intake and thier normal airbox lid intake system which I hear from lots on here works great and raises your intake so as long as your airbox isn't under water your good.

With yours being an efi, I would highly recommend it. For one the layout on our bikes is about as pour as you can get imo. So I would take about 2-5hrs depending on your skill level, snork it, then throw a optimizer on there, which w/o a pipe, my buddies 08 ran just fine w/o the optimizer so if you dont plan on running a pipe, you will be good to go. Also with the way the duckbill on the bottom of the airbox is, water can get strait in w/o restriction. So yes snorkel it just so you dont have a accident and be another throwing a crank bearing.

If I were to do it all over again I would buy the mud guard for my EHS lid block off the hole in the airbox and go from there.

That's actually what I'm considering right now. I just got done messing with it and am starting to lean towards the lid. Just make sure your buddy is in front of you.
If you don't look for deep holes then just get the lid.

I think it depends on how you ride it. The EHS mud lid is great for keeping steam, water and snow out of the air box. Its also easy to install. If your not one to really push the stock limit of your ATV in deep water the lid is great.
The down side is it's not gonna help any with your belt intake or exhaust. Snorkels on the other hand raise both air and belt intake along with belt exhaust to a much higher/safe level. You can get every thing you need from Lowe's for about $70. Adding the snorkels obvious takes more time to add then the EHS lid.

I agree with what everyone has said so far. I choose to run true snorkels mainly for looks and to keep my filter/oil cleaner, but the ehs lid would definately work. I have been in some deep water, but never past the airbox so you should be good to go. I dont really go out looking for deep stuff, but i have been going across a river one time and fell into a deep hole and everything besides the grips, front rack, and snorks was under water. For oen they aint really made for it to begin with but occasionally you will find a hole that ends up being alot depper then it looks just like that one time with me. I would say tis up in the air as to which is best for you. The snorks definately take some time if you are a perfectionist like me. I think i spent about 3hrs on mine but i painted everyhing and got a little fancy with it to make it look oem. But you could easily knock it out in under 2hrs.

Man.. you guys and all your water. There's nothing out here that would cause a man to even think about snorkles. The deepest I ever went was about the top or the tire and the first run through I splashed some over the guard and into the carb vent...and a little in the air box. The second run through I just went slow...no problem. As a rule, I do like my riding buddys to go first through stuff like that first so I can see what I'm in for...but normaly... its nothing.
