Default Brute Engine Mounting Bolts Get Loose!!

On my last ride something happened that cause the shifter to vibrate and become out of align with the detents. I pulled the plastic and adjusted the linkage but it didn't make any difference in the way the shifter felt. I thought I either damaged the transmission or the engine had changed possitions (cracked frame or mounting bolt problem) and was going to check out today when I was changing some grease fittings and servicing the driveline.

Pulled the rear tires and took a look on the left side and my jaw hit the floor. Name: eek2.gif

The rear engine mounting bolt had come loose and slid all the way out enough to about hit the floor board on that side. So I pulled the floor board, slid the bold the rest of the way out, cleaned and repaired the threads, put a little loctight on it and with the help of my trusty tire-iron providing a little engine lift, got it back in and torked it to..well..5 lbs over what the book calls for..to 51flbs. The bracket bolts were loose too. They got a little extra torked too!

The front bolt was still tight but it too got a little extra.

Sooooo...they do come loose guys. Better check yours. I think Gus..or someone.. had a post on this a while back.

Now I gota put the linkage back to where it was..plastics off again...Oh well.

This is a great tip and always overlooked.

Shift-linkage noise on the Brutes and Prairies is 99% of the time just loose engine mounts.

Yes, easy enough to do from the left side. You can get to the bolt heads to check them. The rears have extra extention brackets that have two bolts each too. Any of these loose or partly out like mine was can also make seals go out faster too.....

From what I have been reading here and other places, this happens more often then one would think. And it seems to be the rear mount bolt every time.

Here's a thought, if they loosened up once, they'll probably do it again. Go to what ever hardware store around you that sells nuts/bolts and pick up enough nylon insert type lock nuts to replace the ones that have loosened up. Just my .02.

edit 1: That is of course there's a nut on those bolts to begin with.

Good idea. The rear one has a fixed nut, but the front doesn't.
