Default Air filter?!?

First post here good forum !! I see many guys from other sites......, nice! Question,...I own a 2006 brute 650i and love it.................my stealer (friend and a mechanic) told me to get rid of my K&N filter 'cause it is too high flow and JUST MIGHT let some dirt by................not good, can we say engine rebuild!?!!If I go his route and replace it with a uni will I see a dif? And is it good to do so?If I am planning on getting a full exhaust is a uni good?..........(By the time I have saved up enuff dough the 11's will prolly be out, if it is the same as the past few years it wont be too exciting!!!..............so exhaust here I come!!)

Welcome to the site Bill. Your friend is right. If its dusty where you are, then a K&N shouldn't be on your machine...at least without a good prefilter. I am in the desert and I fould out almost too late about K&N. My K&N now sits atop the work bench collecting dust. Uni or TwinAir are the way to go. You won't feel much if any difference. I just got the stock replacement Twin Air and like it just fine. Use it with any mods. The Unifilter is just as good. Now if you have the bucks...and want a little better flow...then the Twin Air Power Flow is the one to have.

I have already spent alot of money on th K&N filter........... worst money spent ever.... not much different than stock!!! Is the power flow worth 250.00 bones or should I just buy a prefilter for the POS K&N...... if I go for the twin air will I notice anything (seat of pants) ??

Thanx Bill

I think you have to remember that the most restrictive filter is the stock..which realy isn't all that bad. Next, the Un-prefiltered K&N oiled correctly..will flow with the least restriction, but that's because its filtering less..and that's what we need to worry about. Both the twinAir and the Unifilter OEM replacements are about half way between the OEM and the K&N on flow but the TwinAir Power flow is much closer to the Unprefiltered K&N in flow, yet filtering is almost 100%. When you drop a prefilter on a K&N, it does cut the flow rate way down but helps screen-out lots of stuff.

Air filters alone won't make big big differences in performance, but when you do things like Muzzys/HMFs, CDIs, Jet kits...stiff that makes the engine need more flow, that's when you will feel it more in the seat-of-the-pants.

I lightly oiled my OEM filter I slid it over my K&N for a while and it worked great except it was like having two filters..yeah it filtered great! but becsuse of how the K&N pulls up on the center of the cage, it worped the seal surface and caused it to leak front and some back, pulling in dust right into the engine. Because of the scratches it left in the front cylinder, I can't run synthedic oils without burning it. Maybe after the rings wear it down some I can, but not now.

I would trade someone my K&N filter that i paid 70 bucks for, for their stock filter/cage assembly lol

I would go with the twin air oem replacement. or the uni....but I like how 'twin air' sounds. its like twice the air!
