popping/spudder mid throttle
2006 BF 750I.
29.5 Outlaws with ITP Rims Clutch kit sway bar removed
Dynatech ignition box DYNOJet kit K&N Filter
Home made snorkel kit :) HMF Slip on Pipe Grip and Thumb warmer
Modified Airbox with screw on top Warn Winch 2500lbs 3" PVC Storage container
When I purchased the Quad a few months back the unit had a constant spudder/popping at steady speeds. (DYNOJET Kit already installed)
This bike was running extremely ritch from day one. Since then I have snorkeled the unit. Cleaned the K&N, New plugs and attempted to rejet.
Currently running 146 front and 148 rear.
Now I must say the plugs were extremely fouled when I removed them for the first time. The quad had 148 front and 150 rear (rear was worse than the front) before the snorkelling was done. Since it was running ritch I switched the jets to 144 front and 146 rear. My first test drive it's like my brute woke up, from the dead. took the tires right off the ground. When I checked my plugs they looked a little white with a tinge of grey..... Changed the jets to 146 front 148 rear. Did another test run....Seems to not be as snappy but works very well.....Checked plugs...the seem to be greyish in color.....I know a car should be a tan/rusty color....does the same apply for a quad??
Should I change the jets again to the way it was???? Could the ritch condition been cause by the fouled plugs
Now with this being said....my BF still has a spudder when driving in the midrange/constant speed I have read that the needle jet is responsible for mid band fuel... With this being said what is causing the spudder/pop? this a lean or ritch condition? My needle jets are adjustable therefore it's a matter of moving the little ring up or down on the needle.
I am a newbie to the ATV world but have been working on cars for as long as I can remember... Any help and guidance would be appreciated
Thanks

Re: popping/spudder mid throttle
I had the same problem with my '06 Brute 750 when I put in the Dynatec.* I talked to a friend who said to try running premium gas.* I tried it and, while the problem is still there, it's greatly reduced.* I have no idea why.* When I can't get premium I just add octane booster and it seems to work fine.

Re: popping/spudder mid throttle
It is wierd that high octane fuel is helping your problem because higher octane fuel has a slower burn rate then 87. 93 octane is less flammable then 87. You will only benefit from high octane gas on a higher compression motor because it controls detonation. On a high compression motor the gas will prematurely ignite from the higher cylinder pressure before the plug sparks. You control this by making your fuel less flammable so that it wont ignite untill the spark fires. There is a big misconception of "premium" gas.* Thats why it dont make sense that it is helping your sputter problem.

Thanks Eyeguy for the info. I have the same problem and have tried everything fuel/carb-related to no evail. It has to be something else. Increasing or richening the mix did help, but not completly. I like the power gains the Dyna cdi gave me, I just don't like the looks I get from people riding beside me when its poping like it does cruzing. I have even put my stock box back on during some rides just to avoid it. It doesn't stay on long though.* *:peace:
