winch cable with rubber/plastic coating
Has anyone tried using a cable with a plastic coating on it? Something like a clothes line cable? I like having a cable (not rope) on my winch, but the elements my winch goes through (mostly mud) beats the hell out of my cables. A coating will keep the water and muck off the cable and prevent some/most of the fraying.

Seems like a good idea. I think I read somewhere that it had issues with wraping tightly and taking up too much room on the spool though.

I don't think it would last long going over the roller fair lead with tension on it.

Especially so if you live in cold climates and use the winch.

actually the cable will not even last as long as the exposed cable. The coated cable still gets mositure inside the shell and wet and cannot dry out. The exposed cable is open to the sun and air and the mositure will evaporate. I have seen coated cables rust clean into in about 1/2 the time comparded to exposed naked ones. Unless they have come out with something new I don't know about...
